January 27, 1945- September 3, 2019

Robert James Bernholtz, age 74, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 surrounded by family in San Antonio, TX. Bob was born on January 27, 1945, to Otmar J. Bernholtz (OJ) and Mary Winifred Kelly (Wee) in Carroll, Iowa. He idolized his brother Joe, who was 7 years older. Bob attended Catholic School through high school and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1963. A good friend from high school says of Bob, "Bob was very popular, highly regarded in our class, and admired by all his 192 classmates. He was an outstanding athlete, and envied by his classmates, driving a red Ford convertible. He always had a smile on his face." He spent the summer before college visiting Joe in Panama City, FL where he life guarded on the beach and painted houses.

He went on to the University of South Dakota where he participated in the Army ROTC program and joined the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts in history and a minor in business administration with an emphasis in finance.

After graduating from college, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA where he served as a platoon leader with the 172nd Transportation Company. In September of 1968, he was deployed to Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam and served as a platoon leader with the 442nd Transportation Company. He returned to the States in September of 1969 and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX, where he remained until he retired from active duty as a Captain in 1972. Bob continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves until 1987. Upon retirement from active duty from the Army, Bob worked in consumer finance until he retired at the age of 62.

Bob met the love of his life, Carla in 1972 and married her in 1974. They have remained in San Antonio where they have raised 2 children in a loving and caring home. He was very involved with the grandchildren, attending almost every soccer, T-ball, and football game of his grandchildren and always encouraged them to participate in life. He was a loving and caring husband, father, granddad and friend.

Bob's love of the Spurs and Cowboys was unsurpassed, and he rarely missed watching the game on TV or listening to it on the radio. He enjoyed entertaining and being the host, always made sure everyone had a good time and that EVERYONE had a koozie for their drink. He solved many world problems sitting either poolside or on the deck at the lake house, the place he loved so much. We will miss him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Otmar and Winifred, and his brother Joe. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Carla, children, Kelly Land and Brian Bernholtz (Michele); and grandchildren, Alyssa Land, Cobey Land, Blake Bernholtz, and Cooper Bernholtz, many relatives, and a lifetime of friends.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Heart to Heart Hospice for going above and beyond to make sure he was always comfortable during his short time in hospice. The family will be eternally grateful for the compassion and support given to the family during this time.

The family will greet friends during the visitation from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm followed by a rosary on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
