Obituary for Dr. Robert Knox Fanning

July 31, 1943 - December 28, 2017
Shavano Park, Texas | Age 74

On the morning of December 28, 2017, Dr. Robert Knox Fanning (Bob), a faithful husband, loving grandfather, brother, accomplished physician, and great friend passed to his heavenly reward with his Savior Jesus Christ. Dr. Fanning was born in Scottsboro, Alabama on July 31, 1943. He was preceded in death by his parents, Knox and Hazel Fanning; step-mother Martha O'Kelley Fanning; and son Rob. Survivors include his loving wife, Dr. Etta Fanning; sister, Wanda Fanning; daughter, Alissa Fanning Millsap; step-children, Rodney and Elizabeth Bobbitt; Randy Bobbitt and Beatriz Romero; grandchildren, Lauren, Trent and Victor; in-laws Charlene and James Garlitz; Nancy and Edward Ogden, Janis and Michael Polcyn; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and beloved pets, Lenny and Prissy.

Dr. Fanning's lifelong desire was to be a doctor, and he diligently worked hard in high-school, college, and medical school to achieve that dream. He attended Saint Elmo Elementary, Lookout Junior High School, Chattanooga High School, and University of Chattanooga graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1965, and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He was an avid fan of the University of Tennessee football team, and Rocky Top was on his cell phone so that he heard it each time someone called him.

Dr. Fanning was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1965 and served with the 128th Evacuation Hospital in Germany. In 1967, as a First Lieutenant in the Army Reserves, Dr. Fanning attended the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, and graduated in 1973 with a Degree of Doctor of Medicine. He re-entered the Army to complete his internship and residency in General Surgery at Brook Army Hospital in San Antonio, and received an honorable discharge from the Army in 1980. During his military service he was awarded the National Defense Service Metal, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Armed Forces Reserve Metal, and was in the 3% of the Army medical community to be awarded the Expert Field Medical Badge.

Dr. Fanning received his certification from the American Board of Surgery in February 1980, and was admitted as a Fellow to the American College of Surgeons in 1984. A Board Certified Surgeon for 20 years and Emergency Room Physician, he transitioned to full time Emergency Medicine until 2017. His compassion and dedication to providing healing and comfort was evident by the many expressions of gratitude he received from his patients. He proposed on the Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy in 1997, and in the summer of 1998, married Dr. Etta Fanning. Their love of travel together introduced them to many dear friends.

Dr. Fanning had been a member of Trinity Baptist Church for 25 years and a great admirer of Pastor Dr. Buckner Fanning. He attended Bible Study Fellowship, and loved to sing and listen to gospel hymns, and had a passion for studying American History. In Junior High School he won the American History Metal. The six Italian Study Tours, truffle hunt, and tours of vineyards with Etta, and vacations with grandchildren brought him boundless joy. He will be greatly missed by his wife, family and many friends.
