Obituary for Robert Wesley "Bob" Wells

December 16, 1925 - April 26, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 92

Robert Wesley "Bob" Wells, 92, second child of Orem and Lena Law Wells went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 26, 2018.

Bob was born in Kansas City, KS on December 16, 1925 and moved to the family farm near Wetmore, KS where he actually did walk over two miles to school the first 4 years. Bob absolutely loved life on the farm. While there were many difficulties, they were long forgotten while the good memories remained.

The family moved to Wetmore where his parents opened a furniture and appliance store when Bob was in the 5th grade. Bob was active in sports and participated in football, basketball, and track. He was baptized at Grace Episcopal Church in Wetmore and was active in the Episcopal Church the rest of his life…. including over 50 years at St. Francis Episcopal in San Antonio.

After the USA entered WWII in 1941, the family returned to Kansas City where Bob graduated from Wyandotte High School. During his senior year, Bob met Virginia Irene Probst whom he later married.

On Bob's 18th birthday, he enlisted in the Navy and spent over 2 years in the Pacific on carriers providing air coverage for numerous invasions, including Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and dealing with kamikazes as the war was ending. Once home, Bob attended Kansas University in Lawrence.

After going to work for William Volker & Co., a home furnishing company, Bob and Virginia were married on June 5, 1948 and life was great. Then in late 1949 Bob was notified that he was being activated from the Naval Reserve due to the shortage of radar men and was assigned to a cruiser heading to Korea. Shortly after arriving off the coast of Korea, Bob received word that his first child, Janet, was born. After fulfilling his recall, Bob returned home to his family and Volker. This led to over 30 years with Volker including El Paso where his second child, Steven, was born; Houston; San Antonio where third child, Cynthia, was born; Dallas and culminated at the home office in Burlingame, CA as the Executive Vice President.

After retiring from Volker, Bob returned to San Antonio and became Regional Manager for E.R. Carpenter Co. and worked there 10 years. Bob knew he was blessed to have a successful career that he truly enjoyed and regardless of which office he managed; his employees loved and respected him.

At age 65, Bob and Virginia did some traveling and he spent the next 5 years volunteering for Service Corps of Retired Executives as Bob always enjoyed helping people. Bob also found a hobby that he enjoyed for many years… painting in several mediums. He became an accomplished artist and shared his creations with family and friends.

On June 10, 1999, Bob experienced the worst tragedy of his life when Virginia passed away unexpectedly after 51 years of marriage. This was unexpected and shocked the entire family and friends.

After months of struggling to resolve why Virginia's life was taken, Bob connected with a classmate from his days in Wetmore. Ina Katherine Roderick Lasley was his first childhood girlfriend in Wetmore and was living in Boulder, CO at the time. Reconnecting with Ina ultimately led to their marriage on May 5, 2000. For 15 years, Bob and Ina split their time between San Antonio and Boulder until the trip became too difficult to make. Bob was greatly saddened when Ina passed away on May 20, 2016. He then moved into Brookdale Senior Living Center where he met many new friends.

In addition to Virginia and Ina, Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Edward Wells. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Wells Gass (Jerry); grandchildren, Kyle (Amber), Brett (Kim and sons; Sterling and Brandon), Heidi Marburger (Miles); great-grandchildren: Karl Robert, Levi, Lilly and Ryce Robert Marburger… son Steven; grandchildren: David (Lisa), Tammy; great-grandchildren: Jordan, Taylor & Colby Wells and Frances Godshalk with two daughters, Brittany and Rachel; and three grandchildren….daughter, Cynthia Wells Martinez; grandchildren: Jason (Val) and Joshua; great-grandchildren: Michael Wesley & Josiah. Through his marriage to Ina, Bob also added two sons, Jim and Rod; a daughter, Tina (deceased); three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family also thanks the staff at Brookdale for their care and support during the past 22 months where Bob was often the life of the party.

Well done my good and faithful servant!
