Roy Sims Riner, Jr., passed away on June 30, 2018 in San Antonio, TX. He was born on June 21, 1944 in Lynchburg, VA. Preceded in death by his parents Roy and Evelyn Riner. Roy taught in various capacities from middle school to college, capped off by his years at St. Phillip's College.

In an announcement to the Communications and Learning Department, Audrey Mosley, Ph.D. said, "It is with great sadness that the Communications and Learning Department has learned of the passing of Roy S. Riner, a long-time member of the St. Phillip's College family. Roy started at SPC as a Continuing Educations Specialist in 1984 and became a full-time tenured faculty member in 1989. Reaching the rank of Assistant Professor, Roy served the Department of English and Speech, St. Phillip's College, and the Alamo Community College District with distinction until his retirement in 2009. Roy was a wise counselor and mentor to new faculty and a devoted instructor to his students. His presence and spirit will long outlive him. May he rest in peace."

Roy Sims is survived by his aunts Kitty Humphrey and Gracie Gunter, and numerous cousins in Lynchburg, VA, as well as his dear friend Richard Ballard in San Antonio. Roy loved language and history.

In lieu of a Memorial Service, Roy wanted his friends to simply contribute a random act of kindness to someone in need.
