Obituary

San Antonio artist Ruth Childre entered her eternal home at the age of 97 on June 1, 2018. Born as Ruth Weaver on May 12, 1921, she was adopted by Will and Agnes Darrah Weaver and raised in Ft. Worth graduating from Paschal High School in 1938. Her parents passed when she was a child and she was raised by Maude King, whom she affectionately called Momma. On April 4, 1941 she married G. Charles Childre in Dallas, where they lived for a number of years. In 1955 they made San Antonio their home, being one of the first residents in Hollywood Park. Ruth resided there for the next 60 years. She was widowed in 1963 when Charles was killed in a plane crash. Ruth was an accomplished artist, retiring after 75 years of painting. Her first love were scenes of the Texas hill country, but she also enjoyed painting street scenes and coastal scenes, most in oil but occasionally using acrylics or watercolor. She had the following motto on her art easel: "DESIGN, BOLDNESS, IMAGINATION, & BE YOURSELF." Her artwork was displayed throughout Texas and New York City. She received numerous awards including the 1987 San Antonio Art League Marcia Koehler Award and in 2014 was awarded the Coppini Lifetime Achievement Award and was featured as the Art On Main Gallery Artist of the Month in San Antonio. She held memberships in the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts, San Antonio Art League and Museum, and the River Art Group, as well as the American Artist Professional League in New York, NY. She was a member of Sunset Ridge Church of Christ for 63 years, teaching the 4 & 5 year-old Bible class for 35 years. Many of her students have said she was their favorite teacher.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Stewart and Judy Childre of Lubbock, and son, Mark Childre of Derby, KS. She was "Mamaw" to 5 grandchildren and their spouses, along with 10 great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also adored their "Aunt Ruth."

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Sunset Ridge Church of Christ.
