Obituary

Ruth Evelyn Walker passed away in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at the age of 93. Born in North Braddock, Pennsylvania on June 7, 1924, Ruth and her older sister Lillian were children of Reverends Albert and Rose Kehr, missionaries in China and founders of Calvary Assembly of God Church in Honolulu, Hawaii.

She and her sister attended boarding school in Hong Kong while their parents served in the interior of China before returning to the Unites States where Lillian settled permanently in California while Ruth chose the nomadic life of an Army wife. She is survived by her two children from her first husband Chaplain Colonel Julius Ballas: Jules Ballas and his wife Catherine and Kirstie Ryder and husband, Graham. She also has 3 step-sons from her second husband Colonel James F. Walker, Jimmy Walker and wife, Wendy, Glenn Walker and Thomas Walker and wife, Jane. Ruth personified the character and sacrifice of a military wife without complaint, creating a stable home amid frequent worldwide moves and wartime tours.

Her acceptance of all people from all walks of life drove her love of travels as she frequently visited both the Far East and Europe. Ruth loved foreign lands and surrounded herself with keepsakes from the corners of the earth that each had special meaning to her. One constant for Ruth was always her active participation in a Church community wherever she resided and she never hesitated to support the charitable endeavors for those less fortunate while actively avoiding any recognition or personal acclaim.

Ruth's Faith in God and prayer were a cornerstone of her life throughout and she exemplified the tenets of the Bible with her soft-spoken, optimistic, and caring approach to life and those she loved. She was an attentive and involved mother to her children, a trusted confidant to her friends, and faithful and supportive wife to first Julius and then after his passing, Jim. Her smile and steady countenance will be sorely missed by her friends and family but her impact on their lives will never be forgotten. Sadly, this world will be a little less civil, peaceful, polite, and loving without Ruth Evelyn Walker. May she rest in peace and enjoy the heavenly rewards she so just earned.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 26th from 7:00pm to 8:00 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough
