Obituary

On August 5, 2018 Ruth Rutstein Posner passed away.

During her lifetime, she was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the sweetest and kindest person that one could ever hope to know. Throughout her life, she exhibited courage in the face of any adversity confronting her. She was considered the matriarch of a very large family and was deeply loved and admired by everyone who was a part of that family. She was born on March 13, 1922 and then grew up in Brooklyn, NY. She continued to raise her family in Valley Stream and subsequently Rockville Centre, NY. In 1962, she moved to Philadelphia before finally settling in San Antonio.

Her life was filled with many accomplishments and honors. She graduated from college at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 1940 while majoring in clothing design. In New York, she was awarded a life membership in the PTA following her work in the Valley Stream school district. In Philadelphia, she was the former director of the nursery school at Congregation Adath Israel in Merion, Pa. She also served as Director of the Har Zion Temple Day Camp in Penn Valley, Pa for nearly a decade. Once she moved to San Antonio, she immersed herself in activities in the community. She became President of the Half Century Club at Congregation Agudas Achim in 1989 and continued in this status for many years. She was a member of the Women's Chevra Kadisha Society (ritualistic cleansing and preparation of the deceased before burial) for years.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Irving Rutstein in 1972. After she moved to San Antonio she was fortunate to meet and marry Nathan Posner. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2007 after a long courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Like Ruth, he was also very involved in the Jewish community and with his philanthropic activities at Congregation Agudas Achim. She leaves behind his daughter Susan and her husband Charlie Whipple of Boerne, TX. She also is survived by all of the wonderful members of the Posner family, who were so kind to her over her lifetime here in San Antonio.

Ruth Rutstein Posner was one of five children in her special family in Brooklyn, NY. She was the daughter of Klara and Solomon Sterenberg. Her siblings include the late Leo Sterenberg and Beatrice Sterenberg, and the late Shirley Rosofsky of San Antonio, and is survived by Nathan Sterenberg from Freeport, NY. Her children include Larry Rutstein and his wife Ronna from Delray Beach, FL, Dr. Joel Rutstein in San Antonio and his late wife Barbara, Sima and Lyle Wolf from White Meadow Lake, NJ, Hanan and Paula Rutstein from Jerusalem, Israel, and Dr. Debra and Mel Zussman from Wilmington, DE.

Her grandchildren include Rachel and Kipp Cohen, Rebecca Rutstein and Michael Stifel, Josh and Wendy Greenberg, Avi and Dianne Rutstein all from Philadelphia, PA. Other grandchildren are Dr. Jessica Rutstein and Dr. David Hughes from San Antonio, along with Randi and Jason Marks from Austin, TX. In New Jersey, her surviving grandchildren include Ian and Hilary Wolf. In London, her surviving grandchildren are Rachelle and Nirmal Grewal. In Israel, her grandchildren include Bella and Yoram Raz, Yisrael and Racheli Rutstein, Chaim Rutstein, and Hedva and Itamar Vanunu. Loving grandchildren also include Dr. Benjamin and Amanda Zussman in Pittsburgh, PA, David and Rachel Zussman in Rockville, MD, and Sarah Zussman in Jacksonville, Florida. One of her grandchildren, Erica Rutstein, preceded her in death due to a tragic accident in 1993.

She is survived by 36 great grandchildren on the Rutstein side of the family and 10 great grandchildren on the Posner side of the family. Her large family also includes many loving cousins, and nieces and nephews all of whom she adored. The family is grateful to Alice and John Troy for their love and support. The family also appreciates the kind assistance from her aides Rochelle, Ester, Ramona, and Ashley. Ruth also loved her more recent relationship with Barbara Maidenberg who added happiness to her life.

Over the years she accumulated a huge list of close and loyal friends, including many here in San Antonio. She certainly will be sorely missed by all of her family and friends, who were filled with love and admiration for her.
