Obituary

Samuel Lawrence Kanter died on July 30, 2020. Sammy was preceded in death by his parents, Melvyn "Jerry" and Shirley Kanter; nephew, Brett Shalom Kanter, and aunt, Joan Bernstein. Sammy leaves behind a sister, Debbi Freedman (Marc); and brothers, Jack and Mark (Linda). He is survived by his uncle, Stuart Bernstein; several nieces and nephews and their spouses; and great nieces and nephews.

From birth, Sammy was noticeably autistic, before autism was prevalent in society. His early life was spent in boarding schools and special programs until he made the decision himself to move into a group home where he flourished with his "other" family of residents. His life was simple, controlled and structured to meet his many needs. Still he knew his rightful place as a son, brother and uncle, taking part in family events and celebrations on breaks from his group home. His soul was trusting, gentle and kind, his nature was to live, let live and to love those around him. He loved all the popular music of the day that he learned from the radio wherever he was and could sing along to numerous tunes. He was an award-winning artist who took first place in a Texas state art contest with his picture that he called "Touching The Face of G-d", which hangs in the Texas state capitol.

Services for Sammy will be held at Congregation Agudas Achim Memorial Gardens, 1727 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218 at 10:00 am on Sunday, August 2, 2020, officiated by Rabbi Sharon Cohen. Masks will be required as will social distancing.

Contributions in memory of Sammy can be sent to Ohr Lanu Foundation, 14439 N.W. Military Highway, Suite 108 #462, San Antonio, TX 78231 or the Gladys & Minnie Greenberg Kitchen Fund % of Congregation Agudas Achim, 16550 Huebner Road, San Antonio, TX 78248.
