Obituary for Sara Lee Gurinsky

September 28, 1921 - July 6, 2020
San Antonio, Texas | Age 98

Sara Lee Gurinsky, age 98, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas. Born on September 28, 1921 in Terrell, Texas to Julius Nathan Label and Fannie Harris Label, Sara Lee went to Draughon's Business College and was one of the first women to work in a stock brokerage firm, and showed her skills at Bache & Company, in downtown San Antonio. The great love story began when Sara Lee came down to visit her sister Helen and brother-in-law, Forrest Bennett. Helen along with friend Natalie Mell, Sylvan Gurinsky's sister, arranged for them to meet and go out. The story is he pursued her with talk of his shiny, new convertible and his beautiful smile. Once Sara Lee decided he was the one, they married and joined Congregation Agudas Achim where Sylvan's family were founding members.

Sara Lee was actively involved in raising her 4 boys and supported and attended all their sporting events. Sara Lee loved to drive carpool and was homeroom parent for all four boys. As they got older, she loved working at McNeil's Jewelry, owned by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Hannah and Max Moses. She loved to read, chaired the Brandeis book sale for many years, served on the Temple Sisterhood Board, was active in National Council of Jewish Women, served as Co-Chair of General Gifts, Women's Division of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio, and actively supported Golden Manor. She was awarded numerous awards from both Hadassah and Brandeis. Later, Sara Lee joined her son Alan at his store, The Plant Man, answering the phone and making sure each delivery to friends and customers was to their satisfaction. Alan always said, "She was in charge of anything she wanted, but not in charge!" She ran the frontline like a general wielding her green thumb. As the years passed, Sara Lee loved her weekly MahJong games with her wonderful friends for whom she would do anything. She cherished each one of her children, grandchildren, and her beloved great-grandchildren, and looked forward to spending time with them, attending their sporting events or just having a meal with them. They were all the apple of her eye.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Julius Nathan Label and Fannie Harris Label, husband, Sylvan Gurinsky and sister, Helen Label Bennett. Sara Lee is survived by her sons, Barry Gurinsky (Susie), Eddie Gurinsky (Rebecca), Alan Gurinsky (Vicky) and Charlie Gurinsky (Rhonda); grandchildren, Brian, Lori (Tim), Erin (Alan), Lauren, Jennifer (Reid), Nathan (Campbell), Rachel, Dory and Sylvan, 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment took place at Agudas Achim Palmetto Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Agudas Achim Oneg and Kiddush Fund or the charity of one's choice.
