Obituary for Sarah Brinkley Belew

September 16, 1929 - January 2, 2019
San Antonio, Texas | Age 89

Sarah Brinkley Belew passed away on Wednesday, Jan 2, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 89. She was born in Marion, North Carolina to Robert and Chloe Brinkley. She graduated high school at age fifteen, received a certificate as highest ranking student in North Carolina and a full scholarship from the Pepsi Cola Company. She attended Wake Forest University and graduated Summa Cum Laude. After graduation she traveled by herself to Europe, an unusual move for the time. On return, she worked as a teacher in Wyoming and Lovelock, Nevada where she met her future husband William Belew.

After their marriage and relocation to San Antonio she worked for the Bexar County Hospital District as a Director for public relations and training, and later the Social Security Administration.

After raising her family she obtained a Master's degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and worked as an English Teacher with the San Antonio Independent School District, primarily at Fox Tech High School.

Sarah and William were intellectually curious and read extensively on a variety of subjects throughout their lives. When illness took Sarah's eyesight she continued to read with talking books from the National Library Service. Fortunately, the library contained enough books to keep her entertained to the end of life, although it was close! She loved to cook and excelled at it. She was concerned for the good of all, never met a stranger, and was generous to everyone.

Sarah was preceeded in death by her parents; husband William Belew; and brother Robert Brinkley, and survived by siblings Marilyn Brinkley Shaw, James Wright, Janice Wright Hollifield and Jacob Wright; sons Robert and Andrew; daughters-in-law Karen and Janis; and grandsons Alan and Mark.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M., Friday, January 11, 2019 at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough.

1:00 P.M.

Interment will follow in Mission Burial Park North. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johns Hopkins Vasculitis Center.
