Obituary for Sharon Lyn Downum Fink

December 17, 1948 - April 5, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 69

... always put others first ...

On April 5, 2018 Sharon Lyn Downum Fink, 69, left her earthly body and entered the Kingdom of Heaven. Sharon was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late December 2017. She was born in San Antonio, but later moved to Houston, Texas where she spent most of her youth. As a young girl, she was active in her church youth group and choir. She graduated from Spring Branch High School in 1967 and continued her education at Sam Houston State College and the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in San Antonio. Because of her kind and compassionate heart, Sharon loved being a registered nurse. She was very active in her church, Cross Roads Church in Windcrest (San Antonio), and with her extended church family in Austin, Texas at Kinney Avenue Christian Fellowship.

In the spring of 1966, Sharon met her husband, Brian. He was a Senior and Sharon was a Junior in High School. Following their post high school education, they were married in January 1971 in Houston, Texas. Following their marriage, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where Brian completed a graduate degree, then to Tacoma, Washington for Brian's military service and then on to Seattle, Washington, followed by Irvine and Newport Beach, California. They moved back home to Texas, first to Austin, then to Windcrest where they were enjoying retirement since 2012.

Sharon loved reading, jigsaw puzzles, gardening, all her rescued Irish Setters throughout the years, cooking and being a fabulous hostess. She always put others first and had a warm and inviting home. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was very interested in genealogy.

Sharon was preceded in death by her father, Orvil Alton Downum and her mother Nell Clark Downum. Sharon leaves behind her husband of 47 years, Brian Woodson Fink and her precious rescue dog, Lola. Also left to mourn are her sister, Priscilla Watkins and nephew Christopher Watkins, both of Houston. Her uncle, Doctor Franklin Clark and his wife Arlene Clark, both of San Antonio; her mother-in-law, Barbara Swinebroad Fink; brothers-in-law: Lance Gregory Fink Sr., Douglas Conley Fink and his wife, Carol, all in Austin. In addition, Sharon was loved and cherished by many friends and cousins throughout Texas.

Her suffering is over and she rests with our Savior. We will all miss her very much. The family would like to thank the many friends and church family who helped Brian care for Sharon in her last days and the entire team at Embrace Hospice and the wonderful, loving staff at Abode Contemplative Care for the Dying.

Sharon will be laid to rest amongst the Downum family at Sayers-Salem Cemetery in Sayers, Texas. This will be a private ceremony for the immediate family.

A celebration of Sharon's life will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 11:30 AM at Cross Roads Church, 8102 Midcrown, Windcrest, Texas. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service.
