Obituary

Shelley Schaffer Stukhart died Sept. 15 at the Army Residence Community in San Antonio.

Born into a military family at Fort Eustis, Virginia, Shelley Schaffer attended Mills College before transferring to the University of Maryland where she met George A. Millener Jr. The couple married in 1950 in Havana, Cuba soon after George was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Infantry. The couple had three children: Judith, Stephan and George III.

Following the death of her first husband in 1984 in El Paso, Shelley moved to San Antonio where she devoted time to family, travel, and civic and charitable causes. She served on the Windcrest City Council and on the board at the Army Residence Community. She was a docent at the San Antonio Zoo and was active in the Episcopal church.

In 1995, Shelley married Col. George S. Stukhart. The couple lived in San Antonio until George Stukhart's death in 2013.

Shelley is survived by a daughter, Judith Millener Samford and son-in-law Byron Samford of Seguin; son George A. Millener III and daughter-in-law Patricia Millener of Eugene, Ore.; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her oldest son Stephan died in 2004.

A private burial is planned at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. The family encourages charitable donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
