Obituary for Sophie C. Olfers

April 19, 1923 - October 31, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 95

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Sophie Catherine Olfers (née Ersch) passed away on the morning of Wednesday October 31, 2018, at the age of 95. She follows her husband, Roland Olfers (1915 – 2008), of sixty-one years of marriage into heaven. Caring and devoted, Sophie leaves behind a world made brighter by the kindness she showed to everyone she met and the deep love she shared with her family.

She is survived by her two children, son, Ronald Olfers, his wife Marcia Olfers, and daughter, Yvonne Olfers; her sister, Mrs. Dora Nye; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Olfers and Mrs. Harriet Klett; six grandchildren: Dr. Kayla Ireland, Ross Olfers, Dr. Erin McGloin-Shanahan, Melody Werner, Shannon McGloin, and Kevin McGloin; and four great-grandchildren: Liam, Ava, Charlotte, and Sofie.

The tenth child of fifteen to Fritz and Mathilda Ersch, Sophie, a daughter of Fredericksburg, Texas, spent her childhood in the Hill Country. The first of her family to graduate high school, she moved to San Antonio in 1942 seeking employment in the "big city," where she started her family with Roland following their marriage in 1946. Primarily raising her children as a homemaker, she helped to make ends meet as a seamstress.

In 1966, she began to work part-time at St Mary's University in the athletic department and moved to the School of Law where she eventually became Director of Student Records, retiring in 1987. Sophie and Roland spent the next several years traveling together and with other family members.

Sophie was a skilled seamstress, baker, and avid Bunco player. Sophie and Roland spent many wonderful dates dancing to their favorite songs and are remembered by their natural ease on the dance floor. She frequently shared her gifts with loved ones by sewing garments, from formal dresses to cozy pajamas, and baking desserts, like chocolate chip cookies and delicious cakes. She always provided for others before herself, even insisting on it. She was a competitive bunco player in a bunco club for over forty years. A devout Catholic, she was a founding member of Holy Rosary Parish and later an active parishioner of St Mark the Evangelist Church.

Sophie was intelligent and fiercely independent but also kind and doting. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have felt the warmth of her love. She is now reunited with the love of her life, Roland. While saddened by her loss, we can honor her passing by living by the model she set. We should all strive to be more like Sophie—independent, kind, generous, and, most of all, loving.
