Obituary

Terri Lynn Johnson, beloved instructor to hundreds of young dance students on San Antonio's northwest side over the past four decades, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2020, in San Antonio, after a short illness. She was 69.

Terri opened T.J.'s Dance Factory in San Antonio in 1985 and committed herself to developing a rich legacy of dance excellence. She established a permanent location for her studio in Helotes in 2006.

Over the years her studio produced dozens of professional dancers, including several dance team directors for the North Side school district and performers for many elite entertainment organizations, including Tokyo Disney, Carnival Cruise Lines and Sea World. Her roster of studio alumni includes several Broadway dancers, a head choreographer for Fiesta Texas and the top-rated Radio City Rockette. Her dancers frequently earned awards at national competitions. Two of her former students went on to open their own dance studios in San Antonio.

Terri Lynn Carter was born on April 18, 1951, at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Lake County, Ill., to John E. Carter and Rose Carter. She attended Highlands High School and recently attended the 50th reunion of her graduating class.

Terri taught dance for 44 years, the first nine years at Thunderbird Dance Academy in San Antonio. Her expertise made her a much sought-after judge at tryouts and competitions.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; a sister, Jamie Maybin; and a nephew, Stephen Carr. She is survived by her sister, Laura Latham, and her brother, Michael Burt.

Terri also leaves behind three children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Surviving children and spouses are Stephanie Hibdon and daughter-in-law Cindy Patulea, both from San Antonio; Fred Michalczak and daughter-in-law Cheryl Michalczak, of San Antonio; and Amy Michalczak Carter and son-in-law Jonathan Carter, of Stafford, Va.

Fred and Cheryl blessed Terri with three grandsons: Shawn, Zachary and Sheldon Herber. Amy and Jonathan also presented Terri with three grandchildren: Alison, Katelynn and Matthew.

Terri was a member of City Church on Bandera Road. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, seating will be limited.
