Obituary for Theola Taylor

August 7, 1924 - April 23, 2017
San Antonio, Texas | Age 92

... blessed to live a long life filled with memories of family, faith, prayer, laughter ...

Theola Taylor was born to Andy and Mary Odom Taylor, August 7, 1924 in Westoff, TX.

At the age of 9, Theola accepted Christ as her Savior; was baptized and became a member of St. Thomas Missionary Baptist Church in Westoff. Being in relationship with God and being an active part of a local church was very important to Theola. With each move in her life, she made sure to unite herself with a church in her new community.

Upon entering high school, Theola's parents sent her to Yoakum, TX to attend Asbury High School because there was no senior high school in Westoff. She and her niece, Claudies, who was just five months younger than Theola, went to Yoakum together for school. While there, they became active members of Beth Elder Missionary Baptist Church. They graduated from Asbury High School with the class of 1942. In later years, Theola enjoyed attending the Asbury School Reunions and sharing stories of her high school years with her school mates.

After graduating from high school, Theola moved to San Antonio, TX and became a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. C. C. Brown. Later she moved to Mansfield, OH and became a member of True Vine Baptist Church. It was during these years in both San Antonio and Mansfield that Theola attended both nursing school and barber college. For many years Theola served as a barber in the Mansfield and San Antonio areas. She also served as a private duty nurse to several families in San Antonio prior to retiring.

When Theola returned to San Antonio from Mansfield, she became a member of Tried Stone Baptist Church. It is remembered that Theola particularly liked Tried Stone because the church had a Sunday evening service which fit into her nursing schedule.

After retiring and selling her home on Gulf and Onslow, Theola relocated to San Antonio's West Side. Again, having a church home convenient to her was important. She affiliated with Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of her cousin, Pastor A. W. Cole. Theola was active in the life of Greater Mt. Olive until her health failed. After becoming a resident of Paramount Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility, Theola looked forward to Pastor and Mrs. Cole's visits and prayers as well as the church services held at the nursing home by various churches and pastors. She took it as her duty to keep smiles on the faces of other patients as well as the nursing home staff. Her great-nephew, Jeffrey, referred to her as The Nursing Home Prom Queen because everyone knew her name.

On Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 10:33 a.m. at the age of 92, Theola transitioned from her earthly tent to eternity with the God she loved so much.

She had been blessed to live a long life filled with memories of family, faith, prayer, laughter and the many stories that she was always willing to tell. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andy and Mary Odom Taylor; brother, Gusta Odom; sister, Portia Edwards Brown; nieces, Claudies Holmon Hart and Ora Odom Campbell; and special cousins, Phil Taylor and Billie Jones Jefferson.

Theola has left to treasure her memories, her niece, Rose Koonce (Leonard), Arlington, TX; great nephew, Rev. W. Jeffrey Campbell, Houston, TX; great nieces, Ronda Koonce Driver (Lonnie), Fort Worth, TX and Elizabeth Mulkey, Cuero, TX; special cousins, Pastor A. W. and Ruth Cole and Family; God-Sent Family, Leanita Woods, LaGeorgia Woods, LaGloria Woods-Hill (Charles), and Liylah Hill, San Antonio, TX and a host of other cousins, friends and acquaintances.

Visitation on Saturday, April 29th begins at 10:00 AM at Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 2114 W. Poplar Street with the Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 AM.
