Obituary for Col. (Ret.) Thomas Madison Benagh

June 24, 1926 - July 26, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 92

Colonel Thomas M. Benagh soared with the eagles to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 26, 2018 surrounded by his family. Tom was born on June 24, 1926 in Nashville, Tennessee to Henry Benagh and Bessie Beal. There are many amusing stories of growing up there with his sister and three brothers. He was a proud graduate of Montgomery Bell Academy and went on to attend Vanderbilt University.

The Colonel, as he was fondly known to most, had a distinguished 30-year career in the United States Air Force. He served with dignity in many assignments, including as a pilot of the country's first swept-wing multi-engine bomber, the B-47 Stratojet, in the 509th Bomber Wing. He served in Strategic Air Command Headquarters, Saigon Command Headquarters, the Pentagon and was Base Commander in Del Rio, Texas, Rantoul, Illinois and Okinawa, Japan.

Bi-annual reunions of the 509th Air Force Group always brought great joy and he organized many of them. He was active with the Order of Daedalians. Golf was his passion and in retirement, he played three times a week as a member of Onion Creek Golf Course and at Randolph AFB where he was a member of the Men's Golf Association. He was active with Joan at the McNay Museum and the Opera Guild of San Antonio.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy; his sister, Harriett (Chuck) Evans; and his brothers, Buddy, Collier (Christine) and Joe (Phyllis). He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Joan Miller; daughters, Patti (Gary) White and Lindy Benagh (Fred Neylor). He is proud grandfather, "Papa" to Barrett (Diana) White and Zachary (Jennifer) White; great-grandfather, "Ole' Papa", to Maddie and Barrett White; stepfather to Renee (Michael) Meskill and Greg Miller; and grandfather, "Papa Tom", to Allison, Matthew and William Meskill. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews including, Tom (Mary) Evans. We will all remember his infectious smile and sharp wit.

Tom was a gentleman and a patriot, a loving husband, a proud father, a fun papa and a silly Ole' Papa. He loved his family dearly, always showing concern for our happiness and well-being. He loved hearing how everyone was doing and always had advice to give. Nothing made him happier than being surrounded by family and friends where he was always the life of the party.

The memorial service will be on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring North.
Graveside services, with full military honors, will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, shelter 1, on Monday, August 13th at 9:00 a.m.; Dr. Loren White will officiate.
