Obituary

The kindest heart of all stopped beating on June 16th, 2018 when Tommy Cahal, Jr. lost his battle with cancer. Born October 3, 1958 in Nederland, TX to Thomas Martin Cahal, Sr. and Sally Smith Tomat. Tommy spent his youth in East Texas and was a graduate of Nederland High School and Lamar University.

Following graduation, he moved to Austin where he worked for Capstone Management for the last 25 years. He met his wife, Nancy, in 2004. A voracious reader, he liked nothing better than losing himself in a well written book. A lifelong Houston Astros fan, he was delighted to be able to attend one World Series Game in 2017 at Minute Maid Park. He remarked upon the diagnosis of lung cancer: "Well at least I lived long enough to see them win the World Series." Besides reading and baseball, Tommy enjoyed travel and was an accomplished photographer. Always young at heart, he enjoyed animated movies and had a particular fondness for the Minions.

Possessing a kind and loving nature, no one who met Tommy was the poorer for it. His warmth and generosity touched everyone who knew him and many who never had the pleasure. He embraced his numerous nieces and nephews and treated them as though they were his own children. The most generous heart of all continued to give even in death, being able to donate his corneas to the San Antonio Eye and Tissue Bank. One can only hope that the recipient sees the World with the same sense of wonder.

He is preceded in death by his father Thomas Martin Cahal, Sr and is survived by his wife Nancy Hurt Cahal of San Antonio; Mother Sally Tomat of Morristown, TN; Step-Mother Edie Cahal of Nederland, TX; and siblings Stacey Tullier of Beaumont, William Michael Cahal of Nederland, James "Robb" Cahal of Nederland, Marco Tomat of Morristown, TN and Stephen Tomat of Shannon, NC.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. It's the Tommy thing to do.
