Obituary

Velia Cardenas of San Antonio left us to go to her Heavenly Home on June 18, 2020. Velia passed away at the age of 93 in her home surrounded by loved ones both young and old. As the daughter of an immigrant, Velia was born in San Antonio, Texas to Fidel and Matilde Cardenas on May 22, 1927. She was the third of nine children and was born in the time of The Great Depression. Velia attended parochial school and graduated from eight grade. After this time, Velia attended to her siblings and worked part time to help support her family.

As an avid learner, she never stopped learning. She purchased encyclopedia sets and kept up with current events until her last days.

Velia worked at Finesilver Factory in her youth and was an excellent seamstress. She often made her own and her children's clothing without use of a pattern. People would often inquire as to where they could purchase clothes like the ones she had made.

She lavished on her family but wasted nothing. Her frugality assured that her family never went hungry nor lacked for any needs, and her home was decorated with her many cherished treasures.

As the wife of a Non-Commissioned Officer in the United States Air Force, Velia traveled extensively throughout the United States and made lifelong friends wherever she lived. Having lived in Spain for 3 years during one of their assignments she traveled throughout Europe which was facilitated by her being bilingual. As the wife of a serviceman, she followed in the tradition of her family; by serving her country as her father and 6 of her brothers also served in the U.S. military.

Velia was a tenacious fighter. She followed her ideals and beliefs with biblical principles and raised her children accordingly. She also was like a mother to her many grandchildren and in the week preceding her death was heard coaxing on one of her youngest great-grandchildren who was learning to walk. She carried the same tenacity through times good and bad. She fought hard with support of family and friends and overcame cancer about 40 years ago. Velia put her faith and trust always in God and lived by the scripture Joshua 24:15: As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Velia loved sewing, embroidery, writing her own book, old movies, playing Canasta, painting and ceramics of which we have many beautiful examples. She loved spending time with her family and made every occasion in which she attended more enjoyable. She will be dearly and greatly missed.

Velia is preceded in death by her parents Fidel and Matilde Cardenas, sister Mary Lou Velasquez, brothers Frank, George, Gene, Fred, Robert, and Nero. Sadly, she was also preceded in death by her youngest son, Richard Eugene Broherd.

Velia is survived by her brother Arthur Cardenas; daughters, Linda Susan Broherd, Jeannette Ann Seaman (Gene); sons, Robert Monroe Broherd (Karen) and James Broherd (Laurie); 17 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at Porter Loring Mortuary.
