Major Vernal Lee Bracken Sr., USAF (Retired) reported to his eternal duty station October 20, 2018. Born on January 10, 1925 in Logan, Utah to Aaron Franklin and Ruth Ann Jenkins Bracken. In high school, Vernal was a drummer on the Logan High School ROTC Drum and Bugle Corps and a member of the Rifle Drill Team. Graduating June 1943, he left in July for the US Army Air Forces.

He was selected for bombardier training which took him to Lake Charles, LA where Flight Officer Bracken met Miss Betty Gwyn Clooney and fell in love, vowing to return after the war and marry her. After flying 25 combat missions over France and Germany in the nose of a B-26 bomber and the wars end, he kept his promise. On March 25, 1946 they married and remained side by side until she preceded him in death in 2006.

After having three sons, working, and going back to school, in 1951 he was recalled to active duty as a 2nd Lieutenant during the Korean War. He received advance combat crew training in the B-29 bomber. In 1953 he was selected for pilot training and received his pilot wings the next year. In 1961 he was medically grounded and retrained as a Base Fuels Officer during the Vietnam War. After three more children, many duty stations and serving a total of 27 years, he retired in 1970 and moved the family to Austin, TX where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Business at St. Edwards University.

He retired from both the Texas State Land Office and the Travis County Tax Office in Austin, Texas. Betty and Vernal moved to Spring Branch, TX in 2003. He volunteered at a VA Clinic and the LDS Temple in San Antonio, TX. He was an Officer of the San Antonio Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars, a member of The American Legion, the Retired Officers Association and former President of the Ostomy Association of Austin. He served in various positions in many LDS Wards where he resided.
