. rising from secretary to become the first woman executive in the company, retiring as the purchasing agent

On March 16, 2018, Vivian Pauline Van Cleave Bryant passed away after a sudden stroke at an active and vivid 91 years of age. Vivian was born December 16, 1926 in San Antonio to Charles Densley Van Cleave, Sr. and Pauline Robinson Van Cleave. She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1944. After graduation she studied business at Our Lady of the Lake College. On October 23, 1946, she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, William E "Bill" Bryant, after he returned from combat service in the Navy in WWII. After their four sons were all in school, Vivian began her professional career at H.B. Zachry Company in 1959, and worked there for over 25 years, rising from secretary to become the first woman executive in the company, retiring as the purchasing agent.

Vivian and Bill raised their family in Highland Hills and Adkins. Vivian was always an avid supporter of her sons' activities and as they grew up and away, she proudly plastered bumper stickers on her car advertising each activity or school. Each son's marriage brought her more daughters and grandchildren, then great-grandchildren. This ever-expanding family was the principle source of joy in her life, and it was a mutual admiration society. "The Farm" in Adkins was a source of enjoyment and work for both her and Bill—a place to raise both flowers and cattle and where her grandchildren could romp in the sprinkler, ride horses or the tractor, and have group sleepovers. Nothing made her happier than having family around. Shortly after Bill's death, Vivian moved to Kerrville where she lived independently and continued to be active in church and family affairs.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2005, and by granddaughters Sandra and Mindy. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her brother Charles D. Van Cleave, Jr., & his wife Gloria Marks Van Cleave. She will be deeply missed by her sons, Pete and wife Carol Sue, Steve and wife Mary, Tomie and wife Betty, and Marty and wife Jennie. She is survived and celebrated by grandchildren Sean and fiancée Sarna Deuley, Steven Jr. and wife Jenni, Jeri Smith and husband Mannix Smith, Jodi Harmon and husband Garrett Harmon, Amy Brame and husband Jeff Brame, Alison Leal and husband Fabian Leal, Rebecca, and Will. Her continuing joy in later life were her 18 great-grandchildren.

Vivian was a faithful and joyful Christian her entire earthly life, and looked forward to being welcomed into the arms of the Lord and being reunited with Bill. She was confirmed at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in her youth, and was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church for over 60 years, serving as organist for over 30 years.
The family will welcome visitors on Tuesday, March 20, 5 – 8 PM at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 21, 10:00 AM at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 3118 S New Braunfels. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery #3. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Vivian's name may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
