Born in White Castle, Louisiana on June 18, 1920, Thomas was educated in public schools and attended Louisiana State University. He graduated from the University's School of Commerce with Honors in January 1943. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), and served as a Founding Member of the social fraternity of Delta Chi at the University. Immediately after graduating, he entered the Armed Services, and received his commission that same year. A proud Veteran to his country, he served in WWII, and was awarded a Bronze Star for Valor, and wears five major battle stars including the Normandy Invasion, and the Battle of the Bulge. Later in life, he was acknowledged of his valor in WWII by being inducted into the LSU Military Hall of Fame. Upon leaving the armed services, he was employed by the Borden Company in 1946, and served as President of the Dairy Products Institute. He later was inducted into the Texas Dairy Hall of Fame. He held many management roles in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Beaumont, and San Antonio. Thomas's last assignment prior to retiring was General Manager of the San Antonio operation.

As a member of The Rotary Club of San Antonio, he served as President with perfect attendance for 38 years, and as District Governor of Rotary International District 5840. He also served as Rotary International President's Representative on several occasions.

He married Mary Louise Nesser in 1945, and together they had two children: Diane Louise and Walter Glenn. She preceded him in death, and he later married Leila Beth Fisher of Beaumont, Texas. He and Leila Beth later moved to San Antonio where they were members of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church. He is survived by his two children: Diane Louise Thomas, and Walter Glenn Thomas III and wife Georgia Ann Thomas all of San Antonio; and his two grandchildren: Allison Thomas Boenker and husband Andrew Davidson Boenker of Fort Worth, and Walter Ross Thomas II and fiancé Kellye Elizabeth McDade of Dallas; and two great grandsons: John Anderson Boenker and Charles Anderson Boenker. He is also survived by Leila Beth's children: Kathy Dies Munger of Houston and Robert Dies of San Antonio; her grandchildren Amy Munger, Anne Freeman, Elizabeth Stiver; and three great-grandchildren.

Walter died peacefully surrounded by his children on Thursday, February 15, 2018. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 21, between 5pm-7pm at Porter Loring, Downtown San Antonio, and Masonic Interment will be in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
