Obituary

William F. "Bill" McBrearty, Jr., age 93, passed away Friday, August 2, 2019, in San Antonio, Texas. Born in San Antonio on June 4, 1926, he attended Catholic schools through high school and then St. Mary's University, where he earned a B.A. in Business Administration. He married his childhood sweetheart, Virginia "Ginny" Garner, on July 24, 1945, and they raised six children and enjoyed many happy years together.

Bill enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was stationed with occupation forces in the Philippines at the close of World War II. After service, he returned home to San Antonio to complete his degree and begin his work career. He had a long and distinguished career as accountant and eventually chief financial officer at Paul Anderson Company, the largest office supplies company in San Antonio at the time. In retirement, Bill served in a long-term volunteer role for the Volunteer Services Council of the San Antonio State Supported Living Center. He was also a member of several professional associations in business and accounting.

Bill and Ginny were active members of St. Luke's Catholic Church, where Bill served as a lector and sacristan, opening the church for Mass on many weekday mornings. Throughout his life, he was a devoted husband and family man. In addition to the six children, there are six grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. He loved going to the beach and on other vacation trips with his family. At the beach, he was known for his trademark headfirst dive into breaking waves. One of his favorite vacation spots was Boulder, CO., where his son Robert and family live. He also enjoyed visiting Austin, where two of his other sons live, and College Station, where his sister Patty lives. In his 70s and 80s, Bill became an avid walker, competing in 10K races at the Capitol 10,000 in Austin and the Bolder Boulder in Boulder, where he finished in the top 10 in his age division some years.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Ginny McBrearty; daughter, Pamela McBrearty; mother, Mary McBrearty; and father, William F. McBrearty, Sr. He is survived by son Stephen McBrearty; daughter Mary Ella McBrearty; son Robert McBrearty and wife Mary Ellen; son Kevin McBrearty; son Gerald McBrearty and wife Wendy; grandchildren Matthew McBrearty and wife, Tara; Shauna Autry and husband, T C; Zane McBrearty, Ian McBrearty, Riley McBrearty, and Trevor McBrearty; great-grandchildren Indy McBrearty, Mae McBrearty, Wesley Autry, and Hollis Autry; sister Patty Groff and husband Wally; niece Donna, and nephews David and Denis.
