Obituary

William Preston Matthews, 94, went to be with Our Lord and Savior on February 17, 2020. He was born November 30, 1925 in Winton, North Carolina to Montgomery Cleveland Matthews and Helen Ruth Rogers Matthews. He married the love of his life, Mildred Mae McLellan, on October 26, 1946. They were married for 72 ¾ years! They have two daughters Melinda and Melanie. Preston was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather with an infectious sense of humor, love of his lord, and love of life. He will be deeply missed.
Preston was a WWII veteran and served overseas in England. After the war he attended the College of William & Mary where he studied Electrical Engineering; he obtained his associate's degree. Preston and Mildred moved to Texas in 1951, pulling a trailer from Virginia. He began working for his older brother George at Matthews Electronics before embarking on a 39 year Civil Service career for the US Air Force at Kelly Air Force Base. He retired in 1987.
Preston and Mildred loved traveling and visiting family & friends, especially in California, Colorado, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia. They took a very memorable trip to Europe, visiting Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. They also went on special trips to Mackinaw Island and Branson Missouri. Over the years they visited nearly every state in the Continental United States and even made trips to Canada & Mexico. Preston enjoyed working in his immaculately kept yard. He often worked all day on Saturday to manicure the yard but still had time and energy to pull out the grill and cook up some hamburgers or steaks. He also had a small garden where he grew tomatoes. Mildred and Preston began square dancing when they moved to San Antonio in the early 1950's where they met many of their life-long friends. These friends formed a Supper Club; when they were not square dancing they gathered regularly to dine and socialize. The Supper Club stayed intact for decades throughout all the ups and downs of life. Preston was a loyal member of Concordia Lutheran Church and enjoyed being an Usher and an Elder of the church. He loved greeting everyone as they came in to church. He and Mildred were Youth Sponsors and participated in Bible Class, church groups, and every church related event throughout the year. Mildred and Preston enjoyed entertaining and having people in their home for visits. Christmas was always a special time in their home. Preston enjoyed every aspect of this season and it was reflected in their home and in their planned activities throughout December. You would never find Preston at any holiday event without a red tie on, or a Christmas tie and a Santa hat close by.
Preston was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, his parents Montgomery Cleveland & Helen Ruth Rogers Matthews, his 4 sisters – Ruth Matthews Scharstein (Charles), Katherine Matthews Garriss (John Paul), Jean Matthews Tayloe (Jonathan), Eleanor Matthews Atkinson (Alex) and 2 brothers, Montgomery Cleveland Matthews Jr. (Lucille) and George Rogers Matthews (Woodie). He is survived by his daughters, Melinda Patierno (TM Engelhardt) and Melanie England (Ed); grandchildren Brandon Patierno (Hollie), Cara Bond (Kris), Daniel Patierno (Ashlyn), and Brian England; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 27th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
